Harry Potter is brilliant!

After the first viewing of Harry Potter and The Sorcerer's Stone, i was simply amazed. The movie is absolutely phenomonal and viewers of any age should enjoy it. You'll fall in love with the kids, teachers, and even monsters of Hogwarts as you find yourself wanting more than the already long 3 hour fun.

Hmmmm its above average a "B"

They only had one quidditich game,a shame. Unfortruneatly they skipped Snapes challenge, *sigh*. It was funny. But it was missing some of the edge that the books had.

True Harry Potter Readers Will be Disappointed!

Perhaps I expected too much, being a 48 year old man who loves the Harry Potter books! I've read all 5 at least 3 times each and my favorite was book 3, the Prisoner of Azkaban. Even the author, Ms. Rowling, said it was her best writing experience. Why then, did they cut so much out of the book? The Lord of the Rings films were close to three hours long and a smashing success. They were assured of this film being just as successful, if not more. The opening scene at the Dursley's was cut to about 10%, which doesn't allow the novice to realize that Harry tried very hard not to lose his temper with Aunt Marge, ony to give in when her comments got especially cruel. Then, when he first sees Sirius in the park (don't read further unless you know how the film ends...), there is no reason for the dog to growl at him! And this dog looked terrible compared to the description in the book! Someone chose to cut out the scene where Harry gets his first Birthday cards ever and the gifts he receives from his friends at the Dursleys. I thought Lupin and Sirius were marvelously casted, but into the film, they cut more. They didn't think it important to include Snape making a werewolf serum of sorts for Lupin, nor did they include the conversation between Fudge, McGonogal, and Hagrid, where Harry learns to hate Sirius more because of what those people think happened, including Harry being Sirius' godson. They chose not to tell you that Lupin (Moony)was one of the writers of the Marauder's Map, along with Siris (Padfoot), Pettigrew(Wormtail), and Harry's dad (Prongs), and how they all learned to turn into animals to help out their friend Lupin. They leave out the true delivery of the mysterious firebolt halfway through the film that eventually leads to Griffindor winning the Quidditch cup, after Malfoy has been especially bad to Hagrid! The director did do a very good job with Dementors. All in all, a very disappointing experience, despite an interesting change in direction. I will not buy the DVD for this film. Once was more than enough.

Tough Crowd These Days

Well, it made me sad to see so many people dissing on poor Alfonso Cuaron, so I thought I'd try to lighten up the situation a little bit.

I honestly like Prisoner of Azkaban more than the first two movies. I know, time to dodge the tomatoes right? But let's be serious. When any book becomes a movie, you have to anticipate that things won't be able to translate perfectly and communicating the same story in a 2-3 hour time limit is rather difficult. Just look at Lord of the Rings. They failed to mention a character entirely for the sake that Arwen could rescue Frodo in the first movie, but I rarely hear anyone having fits over that.

I think Alfonso took what he needed, the essence of the Harry Potter book, and made that into a fun and exciting movie for the kids that love the books.

What's more, Alfonso created a whole new world for Hogwarts. The artistic qualities of the sets and cinematography are something the first two directors failed to really create.

The only people I hear talking about how horrible the movie was is the older fans, and lets face it, the movies are created with a younger audience in mind, and obviously they're still happy as ever with the third installment.

So if you are a Harry Potter fan or parent of said fan, while the movie is not the same as the book word for word and scene for scene, Prisoner of Azkaban is still a great choice.

Mystery, Magical & Magnificent......

Harry Potter, the legendary teenage wizard has returned home to Hogwarts. In this, the second instalment in the wonderful series, we see Harry return to Hogwarts after getting rescued from his "prison" by Ron and his brothers. He is first warned to stay away by Dobby, the house elf, but doesn't listen. Once the school year does start, so does the trouble. Seems that the Chamber of Secrets, which was thought to be a farce, has been opened. Who did it? Why was it done? While trying to figure out the mystery with the help of Hermione & Ron, Harry encounters the typical school events. He is introduced to new teachers, has trouble with Malfoy again, learns more about himself and faces rejection, along-side other things. Do the trio prevail in solving the mystery? You'll have to watch to find out. Harry's second year at Hogwarts is full of adventure, action, triumph, mystery, and happiness. This is an excellent movie and I highly recommend it. I should note that the film is a bit darker than the first, and some scenes might frighten younger movie fans. It is overall an excellent movie and is sure to entertain fans of all ages. Relating to the DVD, that's where this movie shines. The two disc set has a great deal to offer and has many gems contained within. Disc 1 contains the film itself, and features the film trailer, cast & crew info and a short look at the first film or "Year One at Hogwarts." Disc 2 has many features to behold. The additional scenes are a real treat to have available and are great to view. You can select them one at at time or view them in a continuous stream. You are also able to view different scenes from the Harry Potter video game. This is a nice treat, and quite interesting to see. In the "Spellcaster Knowledge," one is able to test their memory skills and see how well they know the magic spells from the movie. Depending on how well you do, you'll be graded. "Gilderoy Lockhart's Classroom" is a nice little area where you can learn a lot more about the new teacher at Hogwarts. You can view photos, certificates and learn a lot more about his book releases. In "Behind Hogwarts," a wonderful & insightful interview is available with the author of Harry Potter and Steve Kloves ("Conversation with J.K. Rowling..."). "Interviews With The Students, Professors and More" is a nice little feature where we get insight from some of actors involved. The production sketches are a sight to behold and even been able to choose between buidling a scene or taking a tour of Dumbledore's Office are both great features that are fun to work with. Lastly there are "The Activities," and these can provide much enjoyment. "Collin's Darkroom" is a nice feature where you can make up a slide-show of pictures from ones that Collin has taken. "Tour Diagon Alley" let's you explore the area further and view shops of all sorts. "The Forbidden Forest Challenge" is a nice little game that sees you trying to escape from the forest itself. Lastly, there is "The Chamber Challenge." This a fun & great game that has you answer trivia questions that relate to the movie to see you progress through the Chamber to the end and defeat the Basilisk. Overall, I think this collection is superb. The movie itself is excellent and highly enjoyable, and the bonus features that go along with it are amazing and are sure to keep you occupied for hours. I recommend that this disk be picked up as it is sure to not disappoint. Who knows, maybe after a couple of watchings you might even be tempted to mix up a batch of Polyjuice Potion?
