When I originally saw this in the theaters (opening week, of course), I was somewhat disappointed. When it came out on DVD, I rented it and liked it better. I bought the DVD and have viewed it several times since then. Each time I like it better. There is much more to the story than meets the eye (and Jar-Jar gets less annoying). Although the transfer isn't the greatest, it is still good and better than some theaters.

First off I loved the Sw trilogy. But Episode 1 was like a combination Jedi and Barney. Jar-Jar had no place in the film. A LONG TIME AGO IN A GALAXY FAR FAAAAAR AWAY! This animated suicide reason was spouting off the worst of what ultra modern(MODERN) society thinks is cool! Now off of Jar-Jar onto young Anakin. Well George ya did it...you found a worse child actor than the Home Alone kid. Where was the Sixth Sense kid? Now the only reason Lucas made this film must be because Star Wars posters and figures stopped selling, because he sure as heck didn't make it for the fans. Instead he went the big money way of making a children's movie. True the kids love it but in 10 yrs they'll hate themselves for it like teenagers with Sesame Street. And the latest sin of Lucases is not releasing this or any other Star Wars film on DVD. The vhs release has a minimal amount of features and is horribly over-priced! ...DOWN WITH LUCAS!

Yes! This is the movie Star Wars fans have been waiting for ever since that fateful year of 1977 when Mark Hamill asked Sir Alec Guiness "You fought in the Clone Wars?"
The movie is absolutely beautiful and entertaining, much more so than its predecesor, 1999 "The Phantom Menace". I also liked the former, but I personally thought it was a little to slow for my taste. But my criticism never reached the level of many others, who pretty much hated the movie, for various reasons. I personally thought the movie was a decent intro for further things to come, and my major complaint was that it was too slow, which i blamed on George Lucas the director, not George Lucas the writer, but as far as the story, I thought it was good.
Why do I bring this up? Because i think that Episode II is the complete oposite: fast paced, thrilling, yet... it has a few things that bother me... were the first chapter succeeded to avoid messing with the story of the original trilogy, this one fails: a) the story of Anakin was supposed to be tragic 'cause HE was a Jedi that turned his back on his beliefs and caused all that pain and suffering. HE was the pivotal character... now however, with the inclusion of Tyrannus, the tale of Anakin loses impact, as we find out that others did the same thing HE does, which is turning their backs on the Jedi and embrassing the Dark Side... that is, as far as i'm concerned, a major blow... b) and on the same vein: the tragedy on Obi Wan (my favorite character of the entire series) was watching how he failed to save his apprentice and friend and seeing him "die" when he turns to the Dark Side. Obi Wan (Ben, to be precise) Kenobi is tormented by his "failure" with Anakin, haunted by his "arrogance",and yet now we discover that he wasn't the only one who "failed". Our revered Master Yoda failed just like him, as his "old Padawan" (Dooku) also turns to the Dark Side.
c) I think the character of Dooku could have been used in much more inventive and effective ways, also playing the "Qui gon was my apprentice" card better... I could have been a REAL idealist, manipulated by Sidious (as opposed to him being his collaborator), and he should have been killed by Anakin, in an outburst of anger and agression of the Dark Side, forshadowing what is yet to come, but...
Anyway, I have many other complaints(that it's why i give it only 4 stars), but the bottom line is the film is absolutely magnificent as far as its entertainent value is concerned, and one can only expect that the additional footage will help improve an already extraordinaire piece of movie history. It is definitely worth the shot, whether you're a fan of the series or not. So ORDER NOW!

I can't believe how Lucas has ruined what started out as a great series of movies. What a waste of time this one was. Instead of this I'd recommend Lord of the Rings (books or dvds), Frank Herbert's Dune (book or dvd) or Kurosawa's Hidden Fortress (dvd) since all of these were the major inspiration for Star Wars and much better than Episode I. Hold out for the original trilogy on dvd, at the very least.

First of all, with 2 documentaries, several deleted scenes, a music video, poster art, exclusive photos, animatics examples, StarWars.com video vignettes, TV commercials, movie theater trailers, and other goodies, only a FOOL would pass on this DVD of "Star Wars: Episode One: The Phantom Menace."My advice to you is to ignore the Jar Jar Binks haters. What they don't realize is that Jar Jar is a technological marvel, worthy of his own documentary, and he is one of the most complex effects elements of the entire film. Jar Jar is motion-captured brilliantly with a performance by Ahmed Best, and George Lucas tells us in the audio commentary that the inspiration for Jar Jar was Buster Keaton, particularly in the Gungan battle against the battle droids. So, there is much more to Jar Jar's character than these haters would have us believe.I was a bit thrown by the fact that Lucas added some of the deleted scenes to the actual film instead of keeping them separate. Otherwise, why not call this a "Special Edition?"All in all, it is a dazzling use of DVD technology, with TONS of extras that will keep the most die-hard Star Wars fan busy for hours and hours. I know I'm still not done with the extras, and it's been a week since I've bought the DVD.

I love the Classic Star Wars Trilogy, and so I anxiously awaited its release on DVD. The main characters, the quirky dialogue, the basic themes of the story, the sounds, the visual effects, the cool ships, the interesting creatures, THE EMPIRE, that wonderful John Williams score-the all combine to make one of the best movie series' of all time. On a personal level, the movies are particularly endearing to me, having watched the movies since I was small.
The sound and picture quality of this DVD release far exceeds any other format in which these movies have previously been released. The Trilogy is also accompanied by a disc featuring over four hours of bonus materials, including trailers, featurettes, and a short little preview segment for Episode III-which makes me look forward to its theatrical release in May, 2005. Unfortunately, no deleted scenes are included. From what I understand, some of them are available in the CD-ROM "Behind the Magic."
This release includes some small changes to the movie-changes that go beyond the 1997 Special Edition changes and additions to the Classic Trilogy. I have mixed feelings about the SE changes. The worst change is the "Jedi Rocks" song in Return of the Jedi. Few things in life drive me absolutely up the wall, but this song is one of them. The song is horrid and the animation is tacky and lame. It actually makes me embarrassed to see the scene. The original song from Jabba's Palace, "Lapti Nek," was much better. I had hoped the DVD version would see the return of the old song, but alas, that was not to be. The Han Solo vs. Greedo change is not appreciated either-the SE version is still there.
The DVD release does make an alteration in Empire Strikes Back. Darth Vader's communication with the Hologram of The Emperor from his Super Star Destroyer is altered. Both the face and the voice of the Emperor's hologram have been changed to make it fit in with the other Star Wars movies. Even the dialogue is somewhat different. I didn't really care for that change-I liked the way it was before. The worst change made in the DVD is the insertion of the image of the young Anakin Skywalker at the very end of Return of the Jedi. It was really awkward and bizarre and I do not like it one bit.
All that nastiness aside, I still do love these movies. They will always be among my all-time favs. I understand that there will be a newer generation of DVDs around the corner, with even better sound and picture quality. This will give George Lucas a chance to make even more money off of people, but if you're like me and you have already given him so much of your money, then it really won't matter to you at this point, will it?
If you love Star Wars, this DVD release is a MUST!

Quite possibly the most epic collection of science fiction stories ever made, it is the brilliantly designed brainchild of creator George Lucas. Telling the tale of the evil senator palpatine's rise to power and the legacy of the Skywalker family, you are wintered into a world where numerous aliens, planets, vehicles, droids, weapons, technology, and culture of a galaxy far, far away wrap your greatest imaginations in amazement.
Episode IV: A New Hope - There's a lot of things I could say about this film, but I'm pretty sure most of you reading this have already seen this movie. The special effects are fantastic for this film even by today's standards, and the character development in this film is one of the best I've seen in years. The story will have you on an epic adventure of many proportions, so it's no wonder this film is still remembered even today. Although there are certain story elements that aren't really original and the story can get predictable at times, it doesn't ruin this film. George Lucas does a great job directing this film and has the story and special effects work together beautifully; the soundtrack for this film is superb. With so many great memorable scenes like the showdown between Obi-Wan and Darth Vader or the classic flight scene with Luke Skywalker. This movie will have you cheering and begging for more after it's finished.
Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back - The story gets a little darker with this film and has some very surprising plot twists. This movie not only surpasses the original, but is a great movie in its own right. The acting, directing, cinematography, musical score, and special effects are great, and compliment the story quite well. This movie will have on an emotional roller coaster that'll leave you gasping for more. With epic scenes like the showdown between Luke Skywalker and Darth Vader or the tragic end Han Solo faces in this film, it's no wonder why this film is considered the best out of all the Star Wars films.
Episode VI: Return of the Jedi - What can I say about this third film? It's another masterpiece in movie history. The story can get a little cheesy at times with the ewoks and a bit predictable, but it doesn't ruin the experience. George Lucas not only produced a great story, but he also delivered another great musical score and special effects to back it up. The original Star Wars trilogy is one of the best movie series of all time with great moments like the final confrontation Luke has with Darth Vader and the Emperor or the touching love story with Princess Leia and Han Solo, so this movie series never stops being interesting. A true classic for any movie fan.
Overall, the original trilogy is truly a masterpiece.
My favorite character in this trilogy is definitely Han Solo.
He's got this cocky, bad ass attitude that I like.
I first seen these when my dad bought the trilogy on laserdisc in 1995.
I loved these after since I watched them for the first time.
After seeing the ORIGINAL films, this DVD box set took awhile to grow on me.
As I watched Episode IV, I adapted to the changes.
The picture and sound are phenomenal. The films look like they were made TODAY. Now THAT, my friends, is AMAZING.
Lucas said he wanted them this way, so I guess everyone who wants these on DVD will have to accept that.
He's never going to give us the originals, but these will do.

I really liked the DVD. It had a lot of cool extras that aren't available on the VHS version. I liked the movie, too. It's cool to write from the perspective of a kid, and I had a lot of my past questions answered. I would definitely recommend the DVD if you don't already have the VHS version, and even if you do already have the tape, the DVD is a good addition to your collection.
