If you are familiar with the first 3, this one lacks a compelling story, and fails to maintain any suspense. [We already know what will happen with most of the characters--we've already been told the ending in the 1st 3 films. None of the rest of the Star Wars series yet to be made will be able to maintain much suspense either, for the same reason.]Still, as an exercise in Star Wars stuff, it is moderately entertaining, and the special effects are really neat. Chaulk one up for ever improving computer technology. However, the effects may lose something in the translation to the smaller TV screen. The letterbox edition should be better than the cropped version.

look i'm excited for the trilogy to come out on dvd, but i want to have choice which version i watch. how hard can it be to put out two versions of film? sources say that you plan on using the special edition version of your films , but please for those of us that grew up with these films, put out the original versions that weren't tampered with.! i've got the stargate ultimate edition so i know it can be done . so do it for the fans that grew up with these films instead of the ones that came after.A fan ! oh well i'm thankful i still have thx mastered vhs copies of the original films , because i'll probably be watching those. i never was a very big fan of special edition expect for adding the jabba the hutt scene in the first film, besides that tweaking these classic films was a sin my book . but like i said include both versions in the same case! it's a just an idea.

George Lucas definitely tried to appeal to younger audiences with this film, and I feel that people under 20 will enjoy this one more than those over 20, due mainly to characters like Jar Jar Binks, scaled back violence (as compared to the original trilogy), and superb special effects.Older audiences may not only find that the special effects take away from the story line, but they also find characters like Jar Jar to be especially annoying.Overall, I think that George Lucas tried to do a lot of character building in Episode I, and although I didn't particularly hate the movie, I did find it to be the LEAST ENJOYABLE so far out of the four Star Wars movies.Note: I would actually give this 2 1/2 stars.

I have seen all of the Star Wars movies and this was my favorite. It is definitely a movie worth seeing. There is a really good scene with podracers in it, and Jar Jar Binks (a Gungan)is really funny. This movie is two thumbs up!

I knew we were in for something bad with "Phantom Menace" when you look at what he did to the original trilogy a short time earlier. Listen folks, all you need to know is this: George Lucas has NO CONCEPT of what makes a movie good. All he cares about is filling the screen with unneeded special effects, many of which are hard to look at because they stand out so much. I will not comment on "Jar-Jar" specifically because it's no more ridiculous than the hundreds of other things in this movie. Save you money. If you want to buy your kids a nice "kids movie" I'd suggest "Toy Story(1 or 2)" or "Shrek". Heck, I've seen Saturday morning cartoons that had tighter stories than "Phantom Menace". (...) I have to assume that "Star Wars" was a lucky accident for you. Here's a tip for you: look into making the next "Final Fantasy" instead. (...)
